Credit card nightmare!

Any help/advise would be greatly appreciated.
My 86 year old Grandad has today confided in me that he has over £35k of debt on credit cards that are all currently being paid on a DMP with Consumer Credit Counselling Service.
I have no idea how long he's had these cards as he had been burning his statements etc to hide this problem. I am hoping to be able to reclaim some PPI back in order to pay off some of this debt but am not sure how to go about it.
As i have no details of his accounts, do we first need to write to the banks to request copies of his cc agreements?
He is adamant he doesnt want his wife or the rest of the family to know which is putting me in a reaqlly difficult situation so i'd like to do everything i can for him as soon as possible.
Thanks in advance
Clare

Ohhhhhh lordy, what a shock that must've been for you.
Are they old debts or have they been recently taken out - if the latter, I'd certainly be asking the lenders why they've been lending money to someone of his age (IMHO anyone of that age is vulnerable and should be considered such by lenders).
Poor man, he shouldn't be stressing about money at his age.
If he's on a DMP, you should be able to contact the provider and ask for details of the debts / outstanding amounts - if it's a fee paying one, then certainly get them moved over to one of the free charities ASAP.Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)
