The solicitors are the worst

We had a really rubbish solicitor years ago when we were FTBs. Our purchase did go through in the end, but it took months longer than it should have done due to their incompetence. When it was all over, we ended up complaining to what was then the Office for the Supervision of Solicitors (don't think it's called that any more) and were astonished that the senior partner at the firm rang me up within a couple of days of the complaint, offering to refund all our fees, plus extra as compensation! And the situation was nowhere near as bad as the stories here.

So, long story short, if you've got a crap solicitor, do complain - it is worthwhile!

Also, they're not all like this! The solicitor we've used ever since was personally recommended by a work colleague and is super-fast, calm, intelligent and just generally wonderful. Our house sale has been absolutely awful and he's been the only person in the process who has really been on our side and absolutely straight with us.

Rang again, no update, nothing new, they say they have left a message with the other solicitor, but won't chase as have left a message. ARGHHH!
