Second Job

Options
Hey everyone,

So I have about £2200 on CCs (in fairness all but £80 of it is 0% but still). I want to get rid of it as quick as I can before I go back to Uni in September.

Has anyone else had much experience in getting a second job? I work 9-5 but I figure an extra 8hrs a week wont kill me and will give me about £150 extra a month to whack onto the card.

I've been applying for retail and bar jobs.

Thanks!

Matthew

Yes I've got a second job in a shop, I work 9-5 in an office during the day and 11 1/2 hours a week in the shop.

  • I worked in Sainsburys during the evenings 8pm - 12.00.

I had a demanding day job, but I could not cope with both in the end as I was just too tired. It was great on a temp basis, but after 6 months I was ill and couldn't keep it up. The money was great, but I did have to hide when I saw my staff shopping (I am a manager in my day job)

I also hated the way I was treated, but all in all worked for me at the time :-)

I applied online and they liked my experience and the fact that I was a manager, I was treated like I was stupid mind...

As a short term measure it could be great, but you may have slightly more expenses as you won't be around so much and you'll be tired. You may also feel a little that life is passing you by and be more likely to splurge (I did), you would be better off but maybe not by quite as much.

  • My second job is in Asda on a seasonal contract so I have the luxury of agreeing or declining shifts available. The downside to this is there's no guarantee of shifts every week, though they have always been on offer over the last 18 months. It also means no sick pay which I didn't think would matter until I broke my arm and was off for 5 weeks! As a staff member though I do get 10% off my shopping which is worth a bit extra to me too.

I work full time PAYE during the day and am a freelancer evenings and weekends.

Works well for me as I can reduce/increase the freelance hours I work as needed - it's made massive dents in my debts :)

Could you have a declutter and sell off stuff you don't need? You could possibly get quite a bit for your uni books etc.

  • I paid off around £17k of debt through a 2nd job.

It was hard going - I worked 8am - 4pm in my day job and then 6pm - 10pm, 2 nights a week and 10 hours on a Saturday in one of the 2nd jobs in a supermarket (the previous one was bar work but working 7pm - Midnight & a full day at the weekend was too much on top of the day job).

I also went to college 2 nights a week & had course work to do!

Looking back, I really don't know how I did it but my there was no room to cut back in my budget (which is one of the reasons for the debts in the first place) so it had to be done.

The trick is to ignore that income - every penny needs to go to the debts (no sneaky extra nights out / purchases etc) and then it can go ASAP! Best of luck
