Laptop won't boot up - black screen

Think I may have broken my laptop. I turned it on and as it was booting up the phone rang and I shut the lid down before it had booted up. Went back to lappy when phone call finished opened it up and now can't get anything up at all. the screen is just black and I am at a loss. Any ideas on what to do next besides throwing it through the window
Many thanks

Hey CD, I'm really pleased, I too am not very techie, a young OAP so technology is running away from me. Its just that it happened to me once about 3 years ago and I remembered.
Happy to help and glad it worked, thanks for letting me know.
You made my day.....:)

Probably in suspend/hibernate
But have you backed up and created a boot disc, in case it doesn't work in future?

It happened to me just the once and has never happened since.
Thank goodness.
We are both non techies so will just carry on, but thanks for your post.
(lol, no offence, as non techies, that is anohter way of saying we have no blumming idea what you mean, sorry.;))make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

When you close the lid, the machine is probably set to suspend or hibernate when that happens (to save power). In theory a short press of the power button will bring it back to life exactly at the place you were before you shut the lid, it doesn't always work, so in that situation a long press will effectively cut the power to the machine completely, and enable a reboot - this also can go wrong, which could sometimes result in a unbootable machine - which is when having a backup is very useful.
Unfortunately hardly anyone outside of IT circles bothers with backups, unless they have previously been in the situation of having lost all their baby photo's and music along with windows.!!

Thanks Closed. When I got my laptop I did create recovery discs by following the instructions on screen. I am very lax in backing up photos so really should do that more often. thanks for your help0
