I have a black tie do in a couple of weeks and I know black tie means tuxedo bow tie and penguin suit.
But I am a bit skint at the moment so I do not really want to go out and hire a tux for £60. Do you think I can get away with a normal black suit and a black tie? Especially when you wear the suit for about half an hour. you get very drunk and take most of the gear off anyway !!!! What a rip off !!!
But I dont want to end up looking like a kn*b !!!
Opinions please?

yes absolutely - as long as its a black suit with no pinstripes etc and make sure you have a black bow tie then there will be no probs. Enjoy!
if you go to charity shops you can often get a cummerband and bow tie to match - you'll really look the part then.0 -
I would double check with whoever's do it is. I'm going to a black tie do, but they've stated tux or black suit and tie for the men
Would've thought you'd be ok in a black suit thoughComping, Clicking & Saving for Change0 -
As long as you look smart, well groomed and walk in with a big smile on your face oozin confidence...nobody will think you look out of place.

As long as it is a pure black suit & you have a proper dinner shirt (wing coller woudl eb best) & a nice black bow tie then it should be fine.

I have seen people wearing a normal black tie at some of these do's - some celebs do it as well
I was going to wear one of some sparkly/sequin blacks ties - is that a bit over the top?0 -
Wear one of those new fashionable black kilts with the full Prince Charlie waistcoat and jacket, wing collar shirt and bow tie - you'll really give them something to talk about!!!!"Life may not always be the party you wish for, but whilst here you may aswell dance"!!!

On the invite it says black tie/evening wear. Guess I can get away with a suit?0

Go to your local charity shops!! I picked up the whole monty for £25 inc. jacket, trousers, shirt and dicky-bow. Cheaper than hiring, and if you ever need it again it's always there."...IT'S FRUITY!"0

or try somewhere like asda or primark - they have dress suits that are cheaper than hiring (although obviously if you can avoid needing one altogether, go with that!):happyhear0
