Disciplinary Hearing - How to work out how much time spent emailing ?

Hi,
I have been suspended from work for misuse of internet and sending emails at work.Work say that it was a high volume of emails yet it was a sentance here and there to my partner.I have gone through the emails trying to add up how many minutes a day have been spent emailing, it is easy when the emails starts at 10:00, reply again two mins later etc but when there is a 30 min gap between replying Im not sure how to count this.I type 60 w/pm so should I go through the emails counting the words to see how long they take me ?
Roughly in 2850 mins of work, 200 mins of that is spent emailing which is 7 % (i work part time and have only been back at work 3 weeks)
Thanks

7% of your time is quite a lot of time spent on personal emails. That means that you are being paid for 7% of your time when not working.
Does the company allow personal emails? Could you email during your break?0 -
No, the word count would only be relevant when you are copy typing. Even if only writing a line or two, you will have taken a moment (or longer) to work out what to say - and I agree, even if it is only 7% of your time, that is far too much. If you equate that to someone on a £20,000 salary, that is £1,400 of the employers time.0

Wow, that's quite a lot.
Good luck, I think you're gonna need it.
What on earth did we all do before emails and mobile phones.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -

...it sounds like it's the number of emails (ie the volume) they've caught you out on here, not the contents of them.
Ironically, if you'd sat and typed a 10,000 word email to your partner, you'd probably have been OK...but using email to "chat" as you appear to be doing is always going to raise big red flags.
If you need to stay in touch with your partner 24/7, wouldn't it be smarter to just text or email from a mobile? (ie, outside the company network)0 -
just work on grovelling apologies, not arguing the toss. Honestly, it is the ONLY thing I would take notice of.Debt free 4th April 2007.
New house. Bigger mortgage. MFWB after I have my buffer cash in place.0 -
I don't think it really matters exactly how long it has taken - but 7% of your time and it being a conservative estimate is a fair old amount! If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0

I'm with the others that say the amount of time doesn't matter. And also that it counts against you rather than being helpful. 7% of work time on personal stuff is very high (and that seems to be separate from the personal internet use?).
Unless these matters were an emergency or related to something short term* then I'm not sure anything will help. I also hope that in those messages that you haven't said anything nasty, rude or derogatory about work, co-workers or clients.
(*I've seen exceptions to do with buying a house and issues that were raised right as exchange was supposed to happen so needed sorting right then.)0 -
Clue's in the name "work" - not your own time, so there shouldn't have been any personal business being conducted while on company time unless it was an emergency.
As Emmzi pointed out, if i were you i'd consider more how grovelling the apology will be and less trying to figure out what percentage of WORK time was used for PERSONAL communication!Retired member - fed up with the general tone of the place.0
