Dvd rw problem - Comp not recognising dvd's

in Techie Stuff
comp is xp3 with 960 mb of ram
I had a sond dvd rw AD-5170A installed and it seemed to work fine- playing dvds, then I change it to an lg dvd rw GSA-4163B and now it does not seem to play. In the open box if I click on dvd x player it asks me to browse for another program, then if I click on another one (like VLC or WMA or real) it does not play the dvd.
In VLC it says something about error in drive d see log file.
When I close all the programmes, then click on the dvd player it says this file does not have a program associated with it, create and association in the folder option control panel.
Then I put my sony dvd rw back in and now that is doing the same thing, so im guessing the problem is the computer rather than both dvd rw drives, or something i have installed
cd music is playing fine
Would anyone have any idea where to proceed.

Is this the only device on the ribbon (?) cable. How do I add a signature?0

OK check that the ribbon cable is fully inserted into the socket on the motherboard (you may have disturbed it when swapping drives)How do I add a signature?0

yes there fine, i think it could be more to do with the software i have downloaded recently because the Sony dvd rw was working OK and now thats not working either on the dvd0

What software did you download?
Presumably you also installed it?
Did the problem start before or after downloading/installing this software?
If you insert a DVD and just close the tray, can you hear the disk spinning?
Have you looked at VLC's log file?How do I add a signature?0 -

i downloaded real, vlc, and a few streaming ones. the sony dvd rw was working prior to downloading all the software, so as far as i know the problem has started after that.
yes the disk is spinning.
where would i find the VLC log file0 -
the file is vlc-log.txt location should be defined in VLC's preferencesIn the open box if I click on dvd x player it asks me to browse for another program, then if I click on another one (like VLC or WMA or real) it does not play the dvd.
I'm not entirely sure what you were clicking on here, but from what you've said I think it's a case of associating your player of choice with the DVD files. How do I add a signature?0 -

its when the DVD loads up the selection box comes up, when i click on my preference player (DVD x player) a new window opens and asks me to select another program- when i do this the program ( vlc for example) does open but the DVD does not play.0 -
Are you referring to the autoplay box?
Try downloading and installing SMPlayer. (The top one - Package with installer)
Once it's installed, load a DVD. Cancel the autoplay box. Start SMPlayer from the Start > All Programs menu, then click on Open > DVD from drive. It will scan your drives for a DVD then start playing it.
If that works, we at least know the drive is reading the DVDsHow do I add a signature?0 -

Ive done this is came up with the message 'DVD/CD drives drives not assigned' which i have assigned, and yes its playing DVD using the SM player.
although using autoplay (sorry i forgot the name) its still not playing0
