Been so stupid

Hi have been in self denial for so long
But need to come clean ,have run away from my debts I need to face up to them now
I dont know who or how much i owe to anyone - suspect the debt has been sold on as have has different debt companies ring me up to whom i have never answered the last contact i had with anyone i owed money to ( the original people ) was over two years ago
I live at a different place in the country now
I havent got a bank account of my own and have been using someone elses
How do i go about finding out whom i owe the money ?
How and to whom can i get a bank account with such a bad credit rating and no previous address for 18 months

Hopefully someone can help ?:o:o

Blimey, that's a difficult situation to find yourself in. It's great that you're ready to start sorting it all out though. I think someone posted a similar problem at the end of last week, didn't know who they owed money to or how much. I think the advice was to apply for a free credit check as that would list it all.

I'm sure you'll have someone a bit more knowledgeable come along soon but in the meantime, if you trawl through the last few pages of threads you might find some answers.

    Good luck.

    Hi

In terms of a bank account - you will need a basic bank account. All of the mainstream banks offer these (although don't advertise them).
You need to choose a bank to whom you do not believe you owe money to. Barclays and Co-op basic accounts are popular on here and are some of the easiest to get.

One thing you do have to do to get an account is to prove your identity - this is often done by checking on your credit file that you are registered on the electoral roll. If you are not on the electoral roll then you will need to apply in branch and discuss with them what forms of id they will accept (eg maybe something like a passport or driving licence and anything from the tax office / job centre / benefits etc with your current address on).

In terms of finding out who you owe money to - thats not always that easy. One option is to get copies of your credit reports from the 3 credit reference agencies. But by doing this you should be aware that when you fill in your old and new address this will link your addresses - and you are likely to then find debt collectors locate you and start chasing regarding the debts.

Another thing to be aware of is that your credit files won't necessarily list all your debts (it definitely won't list council tax debt / rent arrears if you have those), and sometimes it will list the original creditor rather than the debt collector who are currently chasing the debt.
