Changing Self Employment Job Title

I've been self employed for a bit over a year, but now find that most job opportunities I'm getting aren't really covered by my declared job title. Does anyone know if this tends to be an issue, and if so if it's possible to change the job title? I can't seem to find any info anywhere online about this.

If you are self employed you can call yourself anything you want.

What work is this, do you work solely for a company and they have given you the title.

As long as you dont give yourself any "company" title (eg CEO or MD) you can call yourself what the hell you like.

A friend's business cards had him down as the Cake Master General - he was actually a data analyst but was keen on his cakes!

The trick is to have more than one identity to attract jobs from more than one sector.

Thanks for the replies. But to clarify, I'm not talking about business cards, what I call myself, what a company calls me etc, but what I'm officially registered as with HMRC - they ask the job title when filling in the form to register as self employed (can't remember the form name), and in each year's tax return, plus any tax credits correspondence.

Well I phoned up HMRC (which I suppose I should have done before posting) and it doesn't seem to be much of an issue as long as the fields are vaguely similar so looks like it's sorted; cheers for the replies anyway.

The laws on the UK, compared with other countries, are very very slack on what you call yourself. There are only three reserved job descriptions as far as I know: Lawyer, doctor and architect. It is a criminal offense to call yourself one of those without the required membership of the respective registering body.

You can call yourself a plumber, estate agent, accountant etc, having not done one day's training in any of those jobs.

Job title only matters if you need to get a reference from your company/boss, which you don't, so fire away!
