in Cutting tax
hi, i would be very grateful if anyone could tell me what the situation is regarding my son, he is 20 years old and for 18 months now has been working as a trainee hairstylist earning £100 per week and coming out with £97 after deductions. his wages have always been paid in cash and the deductions on the payslip do not state what they are. thing is, he has now decided to go with a totally new career change and ceased to work for this employer a week ago now and has applied for a job which requests references for last 5 years plus further references for any 14 days or more employment gaps in 5 years AND all inland revenue slips relating to employment history etc, it was whilst he was sorting all these things out that he realised he has no p60 for last year . he has requested his p45 from the hair salon but that has not yet arrived, im unsure as to whether he should have recieved a p60 if the deductions on his payslip were not for income tax, please excuse my ignorance on this subject, i really am not very good with alllowances etc. any help would be gratefully recieved.

He should get a P60 regardless - it will total his earnings, together with tax and NI paid

Your son should have received a P60 - the tax and NI he has paid is correct on earnings of £100 per week so it does not seem it is a cash in hand fiddle on the employers part. Request the P45 again and the 2005-6 P60 - contact his tax office id he does not receive it within a week or so and ask them to RING the employer. I would be etremely dubious of any new employer that was asking for payslips ...what possible reason could they have?? I can appreciate maybe a prospective employer asking for previous salary details (which they would know when he hands in his P45 anyway) but previous payslips seem unnecessay. These new employers would have full references and employment history and national insurance numbers (maybe bank account on payslip) ....could be dodgy!!I have had brain surgery - sorry if I am a little confused sometimes

You don't start paying tax until just short of £100 a week.0
