Lowell Portfolio.....???? Help Needed...

I hope this is in the right section as I really need advice on the best way to take this...sorry it's quite long.

My partner got into a lot of debt about 5 years ago, had around £2,500 to £3,000 of mortgage arrears along with a loan of £8,000 and a few utility bills overdue.

He had to sell his property to pay everyone off and was left with around £6,000 which went to him. This was all done through estate agents and the solicitors paid everything off on his behalf. 17th December 2007 was went it was all finalised.

In 2009 he received a letter from Lowell demanding a payment of £2,451.48 and if it wasn't paid then legal action would be taken.

He ignored the letters as he thought everything was paid off, but then received a letter from Hamptons Legal demanding the money on behalf of Lowell.

He phoned Lowell and set up a payment plan to pay the money back, even though he was unaware of what the debt was for. (Silly I know)

It had been popping in my head recently that we don't even know what this debt was for and could not think of anything with regards to his property 5 years ago, the Lowell letter has a reference of HBOS (Halifax bank of scotland) who is mortgage was with.

I sent Lowell a letter in April 2012:

"I am writing regarding the Lowell account with Reference number: 000000, I have for some time been paying this debt but have little or no information to what this debt is in response to. All I have is an outstanding balance and a reference number which I feel is not satisfactory.

Please can you provide the following details;

- All payments to this account - Lowell and the previous company?
- Details of what and who this debt is from?
- The date the debt was initiated and any correspondence you have regarding this."

We received a letter today 21st May 2012, with a "statement of your account" which shows all payment to them between 01/10/2011 and 30/04/2012.

It's just a standard statement of the last 6 months, no covering letter and nothing that I had requested.

The account is still open with a remaning balance of £1,123.00 we've paid £1,345.00!

After a quick Google search they don't seem to have a reputation for demanding money from debts that don't actually exist...

I really don't want to be paying this anymore if it's not a debt we owe. In an ideal world feel we should have the money back that we have already paid them..

Really don't know how to approach this and what steps to take next???

Lowell have been on watchdog in 2009 demanding payments that do not exist.

Any help would be greatly appreciated..

Thank you

S

Just looked at his credit report and everything on there in regards to creditors and mortgage has dates of when it ended and paid off, which was 2007/2008 when he sole his property.

Lowell is on there as a separate credit agreement, with default!!!
