Fedrickson International and HMRC

Hopefully I have posted in the right place and someone can advise.
I used to be self employed until 2005. The business was closed down properly and de-registered etc. 2006 I get a bill from HMRC for class II contributions. I contacted them and told them I was now employed and paying class 1 contributions. They looked up their records, apologised and said they'd sort it.
Anyway for the next 3 years they continued every May to send me a bill - adding on the previous years. Every year I contacted them and every year they assured me they'd rectify things. Eventually in 2008 I got a letter saying they had it all sorted out and apologised again!
Fast forward to the end of 2011 and I suddenly get a bill from them for £582! Once again I contacted them and wrote to them enclosing a copy of their 2008 letter. Once again they apologise and say it's sorted.
Last Thursday I get a bill from them for 2011/12 for £130 - cue the phoning and them apologising again. Then on Friday, I get a letter from Fredrickson International for the original £582.
Arghhh. I phoned HMRC straight away and they told me they would contact Fredrickson and once again apologised over and over. They also told me to contact Fredrickson International just to "speed" things up!!!
I got a bit narked at the guy on the phone and told him I was not contacting a debt collection agency, when I don't have a debt and it is HMRC's fault that these people are contacting me in the 1st place.
On Saturday I come home to discover no less than 3 missed calls from Fredrickson International on my house phone.
So what should I do? Should I contact Fredrickson International or answer the phone to them when they inevitably call today - which I suspect they will. Or should I just make HMRC do it.
I would really rather not have to start dealing with these people for months on end, for something I don't owe and never did.
As it turns out too HMRC actually owe ME and they are posting me a form to get back what I overpaid!
Any advice would be appreciated, as having read some of the threads on here Fredrickson International seem to be a bit of a nightmare
Thank you
