Because your bank credits and debits on Saturdays. Like someone else has already pointed out, any bank who debits early (as in, they require funds the working day before DD due date) will also take into account any pending credits. So you're fine. This would have only presented a problem if your payday fell any later than this Monday.

I didn't get this from the start. Surely if DD are set for 28th why would they go out 25th. I can understand the weekend thing because my bank does it too but not the whole working day before.

I've also never had a DD go early. I've had later but never the working day before they were due.

Did the op think the 28th was a bank holiday? It's totally confused me.

If your Direct Debits went out early without prior notification of a date change you would have been able to take advantage of the Direct Debit Guarantee: http://www.bacs.co.uk/bacs/businesses/directdebit/collecting/pages/customersrights.aspx
