In debt from living abroad

Evening all,
Long story, will cut to the bones of it,
Have just received a letter from a debt recovery agency based in New Zealand that is trying to claim just over 2 thousand NZ dollars from me.
I think its something to do with an outstanding payment from a car lease i had when i lived/worked in New Zealand last year.
Question is, ethics/morals put to one side for a second, can i just ignore this, or will they actually be able to somehow make me pay this back?
I'm not averse to paying the fee, however, just trying to check out what i'm liable for and what action i can expect to be taken if i a) delay it, or b) igonre it, vs paying up the horrendous 'collection' cost + interest?
Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated!
