May never recover to where? The so-called boom years under Gordon Brown have been proved to be an illusion facilitated by living off borrowed money. Are we really worse off today than we were 10 years ago, or 20 years ago, or whatever.

20 years ago was 1992; we were then in a recession

no-one could see the end of that recession and no-one could see where the jobs would be coming from .........

of course after 1997 to about 2003 we had a budget surplus and were repaying debt but that's a different story

Ty Mrs. Bones and Margey. Also Clapton. I agree that the 70`s were for some, not so great. Along came Wonder Thatch, managed to get unemployment up to 3 million. Then, oh and how they loved her, let the genie out of the bottle and took away lending regulations. Ok for a couple of years and it was clear this policy was pure poison. Then Little and Large stepped in with just the same crazy fiscal policies. Even more grief.

How Brown thought we could carry on borrowing at more than our ability to pay back beats me.

Now we have and the band of toffs, oh and plus the wishy washys. Not a decent policy between them. Sometimes it makes you feel like giving up.

I've seen saying for years that by 2030, UK peeps will have the same living standard as 1930's. Getting by on turnips on the ration card, intermittent lecky, walking everywhere.

Only if we are stupid enough to elect a 'Green' government. Which would, of course, regard all those things as good.

I don't know about 1930's but i can see living standards reverting back to 1960's and i believe this will have to happen if we are to be competitive enough to be able to make things and sell them again.
It is madness to think we can all live like the wealthy did 50-60 years ago.
