PPI advice

Hi, I was made bankrupt in Jan 2009 after years of struggling to pay my bill I finally decided enough was enough and went to the courts to declare BR.

My question is during the summer of 2008 I contacted my major creditor and asked about cancelling my PPI as it woud have saved me around £130 per month and was told point blank on the phone that no I can not cancel a policy after its been taken out.

Was this legal and do I have grounds to persue this further.

Thanks in advance, Richard.

  • I don't really know an answer to this, but it sounds unlikely.

For example, with any other insurance policy you can phone up and cancel it any time, you just lose the payments you've made so far and any cover or right to claim.

I'm not sure how similar this type of insurance is, but I had a critical illness insurance policy on a mortgage. It turned out the policy document had been given on the basis I was a non-smoker - I was an ex-smoker - when I realise (a couple of years later) and phoned up to query it, I didn't take it any further than complaining to the bank (e.g. I didn't go to the FOS) but their response was that it hadn't been missold, even though the details were correct, because I was paying less than I would have done if it was as a non-smoker - the fact I might not of been covered at all didn't seem to bother them though.

Anyway, the point of that is, I just said oh cancel it, rather than changing the policy to cover me as an ex-smoker. And it was just cancelled - I didn't get any back dated premiums back, but I could cancel it.
