Muligatawny soup

Options
Hi
I have been lurking on this forum for just over a month now and am beginning to change our way of life.
One thing i am struggling with is getting my OH to eat homemade soup. Currently i dont make any soups or sauces from scratch and realise this is costing me alot of my food budget.
Today we have had a breakthrough, OH has said he will eat a muligatawny homemade soup, I have no idea how to cook one or even what goes in one :o
I would really appreciate it if anyone could help me with this.:D

OH, do you mean the original Victorian Anglo-Indian mulligatawny (it's Tamil for "pepper water"), or the modern curried minced meat soup? I suspect the latter.

I do sometimes 'cheat' by having a look on commercial canned soups ingredients lists! it can give you a good idea of not just the ingredients but the quantities - and what you can leave out!

I thought so. What you would been served in Victorian India would've been something like a Southern Indian vegetable soup, called rasam.

This one is the simplest, closest one to what you find in the tin that I've found to date. Swap the steak for minced beef.

PS. You can make your own curry powder by mixing ½ or 1 teaspoon of chilli powder, 1 tablespoon of garam masala and ½ a teaspoon of ground turmeric. Mix this in 1 tablespoon of vinegar to make curry paste.

    Here's Heinz's version ...

Water, Tomatoes (37%), Apples (6%), Beef (6%), Rice (2%), Mango Chutney (2%, Mango, Sugar, Glucose Syrup, Salt, Acetic Acid, Ginger), Curry Powder(contains Wheat Flour, Celery, Mustard), Vegetable Oil, Sugar, Modified Cornflour, Wheat Flour, Salt, Cornflour, Colour - Plain Caramel, Herb Extract

For tomato sauce (ragu not ketchup) fry an onion then add passata (29p for 500ml in lidl) can add mushrooms if wanted. Then simmer to reduce. Much tastier than shop varieties and cheaper

ty Stephen for posting that! from that I would deduce that water makes up nearly half the recipe and that the ingredients with percentages make up nearly half - so the rest is just a pinch of this and a pinch of that! and I probably wouldnt bother with most of them!

Ingredients have to be listed in descending order so, theoretically, the water has to be somewhere between 37% and 47%.

I've also found another recipe, which claims to be like the Heinz soup and certainly looks like it in the picture, but needs some serious conversion to use minced beef. However, it does make a good point that, whilst basmati rice is more Indian, arboreo/risotto rice is probably what Heinz use.

Or, I might just try my existing Keema minced meat curry, minus the potatoes and peas, but plus some rice and a bit more water!
