Building Society late payment fee

Our mortgage is with Newcastle Buiding Society, which was previously Nationwide. Last month we were sent a load of information giving new account numbers etc and was a general welcome letter.
This month, I was expecting our mortgage to come out on the 6th as it has every other month, but received a letter saying they tried to take it out on the 1st and that the bank rejected it due to lack of funds in the account, so it's a £30 charge.
I then took a look at the letters I'd received and on the second page of the welcome letter, with no real attempt to make itself obvious was something to say anyone who's mortgage was previously coming out on the 6th would be coming out on the 1st.
Ok, we really should have had a good read of the letter, but one of the possible dates they can change the payment to is the 8th, which would have meant the money would be there in the account. It seems to me like they've intentionally done this in the hope of getting £30 out of lots of people.
Anyone got any thoughts / advice on this? I plan to ring them up later to complain, although as we should have read the letter properly in the first place my efforts may be a little futile.
