£5000 in 9 months- will consider anything!

Hello! I could really use some help.. I recently left my career of 10 years to work overseas, (the idea being to raise some cash and join my boyfriend in Perth :smileyhea) but unfortunately it didn't work out, I was working 16 hour days for peanuts! I ended up leaving all my worldly possessions out there as I couldn't afford to fly them back.
I've had to return to my hometown in the UK, a very small place with little work to offer, and seriously need to make some money to start my life in Oz.. (I've got 9 months before I'm too old for the visa).
I'm not shy of hard work or long shifts, but I don't know where to start! These forums are great, but a bit of a puzzle.. Can anybody recommend online work, telephone work, anything I could try? It's so frustrating that I'm so willing to work hard, yet I can't find anything! I need around £3000 to secure my visa and a further £2000 to clear my overdraft
Any advice at all would be greatly appreciated..

  • Hey,

I'm sort of in a similar situation to you, although I have to wait in order to return back to my partner in Canada due to immigration restrictions.

How big is your hometown? Are there any temping agencies you can join? Join as many as you can and see if local universities/colleges have a temp bank that you can join. I've been mystery shopping for over 3 years now and although it will never make you reach, it's a good source of making more money during your lunchbreak/on your way home or on weekends. Even if you have to travel to another city/town it can sometimes pay off if you have a few visits for the same place. There is a mystery shopping thread on the forum. Could you sell any of your possessions in your hometown on ebay?

    Good luck!
  • Unfortunately I have little more than the clothes on my back! (Unless anyone on ebay wants to buy a collection of mildew-green wicker furniture, or my sister..)
There are some agencies around here, most want me to be a 'car owner' though rather than a driver. I can get a job working in a cafe, minimum wage, etc, but ideally would need to top that up with something on the phones or the internet.
I can write, I can paint, I'll even do a merry dance if it gets me where I want to be! I guess you hear of all these 'additional income jobs' like surveys / phone sex lines / catalogues. I wondered if any of them were really legitimate?

Good luck to you, it must be horrible being away from your partner :( how long do you have to wait??

There was an advert I saw in the Job Centre for telesales staff paying £7 an hour for evening work, maybe you could do something similar?

You could do something like 20 hours on top of any day job every week making around £600 a month gross, that would get you £5k in 9 months.

Would be hard work, but there would be light at the end of the tunnel!

I was surprised that there was quite a lot of part time work in the local JC, some not badly paid and with flexible hours.

I don't know how long I have to wait .. which is the worst part really. My life is pretty much on hold until I can go back there. Currently living with my mum and older sister but it's so tough going from having everything to losing it all and going back to square one. I guess I just have to keep telling myself it's only temporary.

I think you should look into doing evening work like other people said. If you're creative, you might be able to sell your work or crafts but I'm not quite sure how easy to set that kind of thing up .. i'm guessing maybe not so easy. Just keep your eyes open for opportunities, maybe do pet sitting/babysitting if you're really pushed.. good luck!

apply direct for the visa and it should cost a few hundred dollars: http://www.immi.gov.au/allforms/990i/working-holiday.htm

You can get return flights for 800 pounds if you time it right

You have to have £3000 in the bank to get the visa, the £270 is just for the visa itself. It's to prove you can support yourself while you are there.

Have you thought about eBay? I make £600 a month on eBay over and above my day job. I buy designer clothes cheap off eBay (poor listings etc) and sell them on for a profit.

can you not go back to where you worked before, even as part time (as long as you left on a good note)?

How about article writing? get your self signed up with elance, odesk or freelancer. It's really easy if you use 4minutearicles - sorry if that sounds a bit spammy, im not associated with it in anyway, i just think it makes content writing a lot easier! You could lurk around the webmaster forums, they are always looking for virtual assistants and content writers :)

Mystery shopping will earn you from £50-£2000 a month depending how much work you want to put into it, where your located and the links you create. Also a number of companies are based here and Aus so you can get experience here and then re-register your details for aus to give you a little work.

I would say you need to get a part time job doing anything and then spend your free time hunting the extra work on mystery shopping, marketing/promotions, etc. Often a days work can pay £50 so if your already earning a little - no problems. You will need to register self employed but if your only needing £5k no tax and very little NI to pay. Job centre or tax office will help you move to it.

Loads of information on here - or drop me a message and I will try to get back to you.

Thats brill id love to make that much on ebay.

Ebay was going to be my suggestions too. I have bought designer/ high end high street labels from carboots/ charity shops and sold them at profit on ebay. Also made a bit of money selling things through the local buying/selling pages that have started popping up on facebook
