But how on earth am I EVER EVER going to get a job, if this "dismissal" record is going to crop up each time I apply for a role?

    a) Don't use this workplace as a reference - easier to do if you didn't work there long

    b) Pre-empt this by telling a prospective employer if you get to interview stage and explain why and what happened

    c) Do some voluntary work and use that as your latest reference

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Well you have 2 choices, either tell them upfront you were dismissed and why and see where that gets you.
Or miss them off your C.V and say you were doing something elce at that time. I know people think its dreadfull lying to an employer but you have to do what you think is best for yourself.
The reference which is causing you the problem is obviously saying you were dismissed. Even if you get them to change some of the wording they wont lie for you as they can be prosecuted for this.
I'd probably miss them off if you were not there that long.
