Train tickets for the Olympic Games

Options
It's good to see a dedicated sub board for the London Olympic Games.:D

If you're travelling to London by train in July and August when the Olympic Games are on, buy your tickets now.

I've managed to get a return ticket with East Coast Trains for ~£20.

  • We combined our accommodation and travel and booked sleeper tickets from Edinburgh. £56 each way. Great value.

Does anyone know how the "olympic travel card" will work? Everything says it'll work on all public transport in the London zones, but what happens if you can get a direct train from where you live, outside london, in to london? Will we have to get off the train at Clapham, swipe the card (it looks like an oyster card to me) then get back on a later train?

I believe you just pay for the section outside of London but do not need to get off the train.

I too live outside London and have tickets for the Paralympics. As the Games Travelcard covers Zones 1-9, and say you lived in Milton Keynes. On the NationalRail 2012 Games Ticket website just put in for a return from Milton Keynes to your venue (say Stratford International - for the games) and the system will work out the element you need to pay. The good thing if you have a railcard (network railcard, senior railcard etc) that is also taken into consideration for the section of travel that is outside of Zone 9 plus you are able to travel in peak time for a lot less than the standard price BUT ONLY if you buy your train tickets in advance on the dedicated website (or I think you can by telephone). Delivery charge of £1.50 and train tickets despatched to you about 6 weeks in advance.

    Hope this helps.

Really?? I've looked at pre-booking my trains fare for the paralympics via the websites and the price of the train fares I was quoted was over £100 !
I can normally get an advanced saver return for 2 Adults & 2 Children for about £40 by booking 9 weeks before seats become available. What am I doing wrong?

Here's what I did. I checked the East Coast Trains website, in the right margin they tell you the date that they are taking bookings/selling tickets.

I waited until the August release date I wanted popped up. I went straight in and bought the tickets at the cheapest rate. I normally buy train tickets from the First Hull Trains website but their cheapest tickets were £68.

I have to change at Doncaster (rather than a direct train) but for the saving I've made on the price I figured it was worth the inconvenience.

Thanks. That's what I'm going to do. Just did another quote on the London 2012 Book your Tickets now website and got quote £156 return from Doncaster to London . What a rip off !!

I'll wait until they become available via the normal methods thanks and save myself at least £100.

Does anyone know how the included travelcard will work if we travel down on one day and back the next? Do we get travelcards for one or both days? Thanks

We've had to book an overnight stay as we can't get to the venue from home on the day for an early event.

I did email the enquiries from their website and got a reply from the agent saying they didn't know!

I don't know either, but seeing as you get a travelcard for the day you have event tickets, I can guess... :D

That's interesting. I've just looked on the official 2012 train tickets website: http://www.nationalrailgamestravel.co.uk/ and the price quotes are coming up as much cheaper than the usual fares. I'm not going to book until I get my tickets though.

I had a look on the bespoke site the day it launched as I need to get Dad and I there from Carlisle travelling down on the 9th and back up on the 10th August. On a normal advance we're looking at under £100 for two of us.

Best price on the 'cheaper' olympic advance site is £270 for both of us. It says that singles are available for £31.40 but these don't exist and never have. I looked at the price of a standard advance on the day they were released for our dates and it came out at £206 for two of us.

In tandem with everyone else they're hiking the prices up by almost double and catching those who cant be bothered and think 'special olympic cheap advances' will actually be that.

We're driving and I've no doubt the trains will be empty at the prices being asked.
