My E Drive Won't Read Disks

HI guys I could do with a little advice re a DVD/CD drive that is not reading disks.

Here’s the story. If I insert a music CD into the drive it will often play it for a few minutes and then stop. Insert a DVD into it and it just keeps chug, chug, chugging as does the CD when it stops.

I’ve just bought a Hama DVD Laser Lens Cleaner and when I insert it into the disk drive it acts as though it is trying to read or open it but it doesn’t succeeded.

What does happen when you put a disk into the drive and click on the e drive icon is that the drive opens automatically and I’m giving the message ‘please insert a disk’ but one has already been inserted. Any ideas as to what may be going on?

To be honest I very seldom use the disk drive, it’s there for loading programs and I’ve played the occasional DVD/CD on it. Don’t know the last time I actually used it but I’m doing some work now and I do need it.

My nephew has told me that drives on laptops can be quite temperamental and that he uses an external drive himself. Don’t really want to spend the money on an external hard drive if I can avoid it so any suggestions. As always they’ll be greatly appreciated.

My computer is a Dell Inspiron Laptop, bought sometime in 2009/10 and is operating Windows 7 Home.

The lens cleaner should spin for 10-20 seconds then stop (and may auto-eject)

When you insert a disk into the drive there should be no need to click the e: icon to play/run the disk unless you have disabled autorun
How do I add a signature?

Sounds like the drive is borked.

Pop the service tag into their web site and look for service manuals; Dell provides excellent instructions if you ever need to take one of their machines to bits.

IIRC the optical drive on an Inspiron is held in by a single screw on the underside.

There are ~60 different models. If this is true for all of them I'll be pleasantly surprised.

It might be worth giving this a whirl before starting to dismantle things.
