Actually, I have just received an Email from ABH consultant .. The Green Tick Means that the Test was successfully submitted .,. NOT successfully passed :S :S

    Good Luck anyway !!
  • I also applied for the web search evaluator position and am hesitant to sign the NDA. Sorry, but I'm new to this and am only persuing this as a second job. Question: Do you have to form a corporation in your name to work this job? I have until tomorrow to sign the NDA and I am not particularly interested if I need to start a corporation, the taxes involved, etc. Any advise?
  • For my bad experience, I recommend you to leave it and don't waste your valuable time. This offers don't seem like there are really are. After first evaluation I successfully pass the process, I was happy. Then the email of the HR for the previous training of a new project, that were about 3 weeks, and more than 30 hours of study, solving technical problems, and practice in a mechanical task. After these 3 weeks, doing a very good job, and successfully passed the next exam, I received an email for not considering for the project by the high competitive participants and they give me the thanks for my efforts, and without any compensation neither explications. That was so frustrating. From this experience I think these job proposals are seriously questioned.
  • I worked for Appen Butler Hill and I have to say I loved it. I was quite disappointed when my contracted ended after several months of work.

The money is really good and they always paid on time. And unlike some of these types of companies, you are dealing with real people who you can email at any time with a query and they email you back promptly. They were always pleasant and polite to deal with.

Their training program is excellent and definitely geared towards helping you to pass. And as long as you passed, you were paid for the training. I didn't find the training difficult, but I made sure that I went through it thoroughly as I was determined to pass.

If you have the opportunity to work for this company, I was definitely say go for it. I hope to work for them again when they have more work in the UK.

Hi Shytype, if you don't mind me asking, what type of work were you doing for Appen Butler Hill?
  • Not sure if they've rebranded or it's a different subsidiary but I've been approached by Appen (no mention of Butler Hill) to work as a web search evaluator.

They had me do the test and then sent me the NDC which I've just signed (I read it and they only get my soul if I do something really stoopid!)

They're talking about 5 to 30 hours training and then 20 hours of simulated production work with no mention of this being paid (despite me asking them to clarify) If it does turn out to be 50 hours unpaid I will be telling them to "do one!"

Has anyone else heard from them more recently? Shytype? Anyone?

  • Just found a number of testimonials on Indeed.com (I can't put a link on as a newbie. There are 4 positive and 12 VERY negative, and all the positive ones are from current employees save 1 who says that he sometimes didn't get paid but still loved it!.... Nutter! I don't think I'll be proceeding with that one.

If you're looking for work, it's defintiely worth a go. I worked for them twice. First time for about a year and left as the 20/hrs a week was difficult for me given other commitments and there was no flexibility with it. 2nd time was in the past year, unfortunately only lasted a few (maybe 4 or 5 tops) months before they let me go. And in that time I was suspended from work for a week maybe 4 times due to my performance. So I'm not pretending it's easy money, it was much harder to satisfy them this time round and the pay wasn't as good due to the exchange rate, but you might find you have the knack for it and working from home has all sorts of advantages.

You do receive a stipend for completing the training period successfully. But if you don't pass your test at the end and actually start working, you don't get paid. I thought that was fair enough.

I never once had problems getting paid.

There are definitely other threads about it on this board.

    Hi MrW

I have worked for all of the "big 3" (appen, lionbridge and leapforce). I currently am with appen and have been for 2 years now.

They all have their peculiarities which work for some people and !!!! off others. Appen in general are a lot more professional, but at the same time this leads to them being very strict and they lose a lot of judges this way. Most people don't like this about them which I can understand.

Regarding payment, they have always paid me. Training payment may change, but it used to be if you passed and got into production they would pay you (they dont want people signing up for training, doing nothing and expecting full payment).

Don't underestimate how lucrative these jobs can be. They are proper jobs. I get $1000+ a month. However I must stress I would not recommend as a replacement for a proper job. Reasons being they can drop you at any point they wish, you basically have 0 job security.

There is a long thread on Appen here that might get more responses and is worth a read through:
