Barclays Select unauthorised direct debit

Can anyone advise with a problem I have with Barclays Select. We are in default with a loan but have an agreement via Cashflow (upon the advice of the CAB) of £18.00 per month which is paid by standing order. However, Barclays took it upon themselves to set up another direct debit, without my knowledge or consent, of £87.00 and took payment. We have telephoned them four times and each time they have confirmed that this should not have happened and that they will refund the money. The payment was taken on 26th April and we have not received a payment yet. Luckily my own bank, Santander, is more co-operative and has refunded the money based upon the fact that there is no agreement from me for the direct debit, but this still does not answer why Barclays are being so inefficient and uncooperative. Can anyone help or advise?

Inefficient for sure, Uncooperative? maybe not.

They have at least aknowledged the mistake and are going to put it right.

This is quite common though where payments are taken by mistake, it can take approx 30 days to retrieve it, Barclays are not alone in this.

The Direct Debit Mandate can retrieve money immediately though, as Santander have done (crikey, Santander doing something right!! whatever next?).

At least you aren't dealing with Payday Loan Companies who would, by this time, have completely cleaned you out.

Complain to Barclays, you might get a gift voucher or summat.
