Work 60 miles round trip away - costing me too much

The other problem comes from shifts being cut short all of the time (that's a different thread), not being able to cope with the night shifts like I thought I could etc.
I was thinking about getting another car or a scooter. However... I have zero spare cash. So finding the cash to change the car (would need to buy one before I sell mine) or Scooter/CBT is slim. I could start saving. But I would only be saving £5 a week probably.
My car costs are currently:
£10 per day in fuel
£200 a month in insurance
then the general bits which need doing as and when (MOT and Tax both due soon)
The car is a 1.6 Nissan 100nx. An old M Reg, but I wouldn't scrap it. I would be able to sell for a lot more than scrap value.
I have asked work for a transfer 2 months ago. They have done nothing about it....0 -
get a small loan and buy a scooter, pass a cbt and get shut of the car. To be honest you sound like you are trying to justify leaving your job, are you unhappy there?Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0

Why is the insurance so expensive? Have you only recently passed your test?0

I can't get a loan. My credit will not allow it.
I am pretty unhappy there, but only because of the night shift. And the whole no extra pay if they demand I work 1 week of nights etc. (I get shift bonus for 1 night a week but no more...)Why is the insurance so expensive? Have you only recently passed your test?
Passed 3 years ago, 4 next month. No NCB as I haven't been regularly driving my own car.0 -
Answer to your question you can quit but you wouldn't get any JSA for upto 26 weeks, as you have made yourself unemployed.
They don't have to know tho

You dont need a large bank loan, a couple of hundred quid will buy you a scooter and a ton for the cbt, you will save around £180 on insurance and about £170 on fuel per month so you can pay it back very very quick.Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0 -

You obviously do not ride then
For a 60m commute you will struggle with a 50cc scooter witout even taking into account his built. Also dangerous if he is going on fast A roads and cant go on motorways.
I doubt very much the Insurance for a new rider will be £140 a month.
You definitely wont get reliable scooter (125CC) for £200 . ADD HELMET AND PROTECTIVE CLOTHING/FOOTWEAR ETC will cost MORE than the scooter itself!0 -
A nice car, but there's why the fuel and insurance costs quite a bit. Something more frugal like a Skoda Fabia 1.2htp should cut the insurance and fuel cost noticeably. Remember there's no point spending £2600 a year on petrol, when you could get a car for £1000 and spend £1600 on petrol in the first year, then save £1000 every subsequent year. Ok it might not work out exactly like that, but it should help you if you get the calculator out.My car costs are currently:

As a rough guestimate, I make that about £400 a month - a one bedroom flat would cost less to rent.
You have my sympathies as I live in South Wales and just applied for a job in Bristol. This would involve £12.30 each day for a return journey on the train (getting to the train station would cost a bus ticket). Or if I took the car, the bridge toll back into Wales on the Severn Bridge would be £6 each day. Both the train and bridge toll prices exclude any small discount from season tickets.Wanted a job, now have one. :beer:0 -
If you cannot cope with the night shifts then see your GP. If your GP agrees you may be able to use that advice from the GP to quit and not be sanctioned. How much is the tax on the car? Isn't it £220 or £242 for two 6 month tax discs? Do you have that money? That would be quite a few weeks work just to get that money as well as the £200 a month insurance. I personally wouldn't continue in the job and try and find something more local without the car at all. You can quit and have a short sanction applied if it is uneconomical to continue to work due to high travel costs but you would not then be able to keep using the car.The other problem comes from shifts being cut short all of the time (that's a different thread), not being able to cope with the night shifts like I thought I could etc.

Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.
