Don't go for Open Office!!
Go for Libre Office instead http://www.libreoffice.org
It's a bit more functional than OpenofficeLaters

Are you wanting to use a database which has been written by someone else?
If so, you just need the Access runtime which is free from MS;

Access uses VBA whereas Open and Libre use Java and OpenOfficeBasic, which are not totally compatible.
Although simple databases can be transferred over anything using VBA functions will probably not.0 -
I'm just converting it for someone else, as they no longer have access to Access.
AFAIK only the basic functions are required, in which case Base (be it in Open Office or Libre Office) may well do the job.No free lunch, and no free laptop0
