I live in an old Belfast house. I can hear my neighbors cough, blow their nose and just about everything they do. Though I live in a terrorist house.
I wouldnt advertise where you live ;)

As advised by others I would really hold out for a detached house if possible, even if it means you get a smaller or less well finished property. I lived in a semi d for 15 years and had 3 separate neighbours, 1st set argued all the time, 2nd was brilliant and 3rd partied all the time:mad: This house was constructed in 1995 and had double skinned walls with insulation between them, apparently :o

As a child I lived in a 1970's constructed semi and never heard the neighbours.

Conclusion being, modern house construction is rubbish, older houses won't have double walls or insulation, so go for a 1970's construction or do yourself and your family a favour and stretch the budget for a detached. I have recently moved into my first detached house and it is heaven.
I am trying, honest;) very trying according to my dear OH:rotfl:
  • Having always lived in Detached houses, I owned 1 Semi Detached once, and if I'm honest, never again..... there is just always that "don't make too much noise in the house" thought there in he back of your head... Would be a real pain if there are Kids involved...... thankfully at the time I had elderly neighbours who owned their home so it wasn't ever an issue, just could see so many instances where it could be

We're potential FTBs and are holding out for a detached, hate the idea of noisy neighbours!!

  • If money was tight, persoannly I'd prefer a detached in my second or third choice area where it might be a bit more affordable than a semi-detached in my first choice...

If you can buy a detached please do, know a lot of people who have bought semi's of all different ages and had a lot of trouble, I live in a small detached but could have bought a big semi for the same money, just didnt want to take the risk

Deario, everyone's very anti semi-detached here on MSE NI.

I have lived in terraced, semi & detached, now back living in a semi. Yes, I can hear doors close late at night, can even hear curtains open in morning (not sure why I can hear that so clear), but isn't there benefits to a semi? Improved heating insulation? More house for your pound? Aren't most houses out there semi?

A bit of noise doesn't bother me, our neighbours are quite good most times. But I can appreciate that it'd be awful to have neighbours that party non stop.

Hit the nail on the head there ;) once you live next to a rented out party house you will NEVER buy a semi again.
