Giving in to my inner patriot

Looking ahead to the jubilee weekend, I notice that the shops are selling lots of Union Jack branded merchandise.

I'd like to buy one item - either a dress or t-shirt to wear with jeans to wear on the weekend, ideally with the mark of the union on it rather than something red white and blue, which can be mistaken for the US, Australia, NZ etc. I wouldn't normally want to buy something for a national event, but my reasoning is that I will get some more wear out of it during the Olympics and for other events where I might wish to brand myself as a Brit so there will be value in it eventually. I already have this pair of these earings, but they are small and I want to make a bit more of a statement:images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSWL1fS9sWHjfsUqmcwLL39hcDQ_lfw6it4JA-IC2cdSqEN_SfoLQ

Unfortunately, most of the stuff I've seen is pretty garish and horrendous. Can anyone recommend something vaguely tasteful? I don't want to look like this lol:

This brings back images of Geri Halliwell and that Union Jack dress :rotfl: There's probably loads of them knocking around in second hand shops now, or on EBay. Not sure if that's quite what you had in mind, though, lol

I was in Next the other day and they seem to have dresses very, very similar!

OP, a lot of high street shops (including Next) have some t-shirts that feature the flag in a more subtle way.

Geri's range in Next is not very subtle http://www.next.co.uk/g372076s3#847622g37 but for any wannabe spice girls here it is. There's even a maxi dress version for anyone who doesn't want to flash their legs.

May not be a tip you had thought about or even something that bothers you, but can I suggest that if you are going to wear the Union Jack to celebrate the nationality and Olympics, don't forget to look at where it was made. I know a great deal of pieces are not made in the UK now-a-days but there will be some and could make the item feel a bit more authentic.

There's no shape to it, it looks like a sheet! All Geri's dresses are very in-your-face.

  • Why not a badge/brooch of the Union Flag? Small, discreet and still shows your allegiance. :)

I was starting to think the same - it might just be easier to sow a badge onto a blue dress. Not that it's the world's biggest problem :D.

How about these or these - just noticed them when ordering something else. I can't imagine what I would look like - let's just say I have slightly chunkier legs than the model!

On a more serious note QVC had a reasonable range of Union Jack stuff which may be ok - link here
