For some reason I've never really got on with the green lentils when cooked in the usual way, so I'm on the look out for a good recipe - any suggestions as to what to so with them (including for non-dahl dishes) will be gratefully received.

I don't know if anyone is still reading this thread but here's my recipe for easy, cheap, low fat daal. 8oz of yellow split peas or chana daal, rinse, put in pot with twice the volime of water, bring to the boil, skim off any froth, simmer till soft but not sludgy, adding more water little by little as required. I like the daal to still have a little shape but not have any water left. It takes a low hob heat for this, or do it in the oven.
Then add salt to taste plus good old fashioned curry powder. That's it. No fat, no veg, just curry powder, salt, daal and water. (You can use garam masala if you like but that's just fancy curry powder.) It's really surprisingly good, excellent for these folk who are cutting down on fat in their diet and it freezes well. My kids love it. I do make fancier daals with the spices and onion fried in oil and poured on top but this is my middle of the week recipe for putting next to another curry.crumblepie wrote: »Can't you do a home delivery? When i was first recovering from illness i was almost entirely confined to home and used home delivery, the only time i had a subsitution i telephoned and said i was not happy and they gave me a refund on the produce, which made me happier. I never had ropey fresh goods arrive.
If there were routine porblems it would be worthwhile going up th managment scale to resolve them imo, as its such a valuable service.
Re
Ack of asian food stores.......check ebay for spices. We buy tumeric in bulk for animal use, and have found a seller on ebay the cheapest way to do this. Excellent quality and i use the same in our cooking. I do not have an indian nor a chinese supermarket locally either. I have been told there is an indian food shop somewhere in salisbury, so maybe i will find it one day, i go into salisbury a handful of times a year so could stock up then. bristol has a chinese supermaket i have not been to yet, but plant to go next. Time i go to bristol and fill the freezer with things.0 -
Hi all,
Sorry to jump in on the thread as I have nothing useful to add having never cooked dhal but I'm keen to try it! Just wondered if anyone had a slow cooker recipe for it? Is is something that should be cooked in a pan instead?
Off to Brixton market this weekend to stock up on some of the spices in preparation....can you tell I'm excited by this!0
