Capital One Default - need help with removal please!

Hi
I would be really grateful for some help with a query I have.
I have just discovered, through purchasing my credit profile on creditexpert.co.uk, that I have a default on my credit report by Capital One dated 28.06.2009. This has come as a total and utter shock because I paid the balance of the account in full on 02.07.2009, just 5 days after the default was registered. I had no knowledge that the default was to be issued / had been issued. I never received a default notice from Capital One. I have a letter from Capital one dated a few days after my full payment of the balance which states the account is now closed. No mention of any default. How can this be fair? I was unaware of the default and the account was paid in full. Even if I had known about the default - which I catergorically did not - surely they could allow a few days for the payment to process and clear at their end without proceeding to default?
Particularly distressing is the fact the balance is for a relatively low figure (£152.00) AND relates to a credit account which I opened in 2005, when I was 18! The default was not placed on the account until 2009 though which means it will remain on my credit profile until 2015! This is such a depressing thought, particulary given I paid the full balance in just days of the default. It has a huge negative impact on my credit rating, which is of particular importance to me. Since paying the account, I have graduated from university and am due to begin training as a Solicitor in September 2012. Having a ‘Default Notice’ against my name goes against my professional integrity, something I have worked hard for over the past few years. I am therefore extremely frustrated and disappointed that I am limited by the default notice, something which I had no prior knowledge of. I am due to apply for a Career Development Loan in July and will likely be rejected as a result of this default which may scuper my plans.
PLEASE HELP! Is there ANYTHING I can do?
Thanks!

First of all, take a deep breath. A default has nothing to do with your progressional integrity. Nor is it necessarily a disaster for your credit rating. There are no fixed rules on how a creditor chooses to interpret your credit score. You are correct that it may be harder to get a loan, but if you were applying for loan in your bank, for example, and you were able to meet with and discuss the issue with the bank manager, I'm sure you would make progress - particularly if you could demonstrate the salary of a solicitor. You may be able to do the same with your career development loan.
Now, as for the specifics of default notification, I'm not able to answer that, but I'm sure someone else on here can provide you with advice. For now, relax - a £152 default is manageable.0 -
Thanks Martin. I appreciate your post. Its the principle of having a default on my record which I had no prior knowledge of. I paid the full amount in good faith. It makes me so angry because I thought I was doing the 'right' thing by being responsible yet its done me no good at all.
Can anybody advise me as to how I could proceed with getting the default removed?

Well as you know Credit Expert or Experian or any other for that matter cannot remove this information.
So your first step will be to write to them and find out what they alledge was sent to you or how they managed the process.
Once you are in posession of the full facts you will know what the next steps are.
Try searching for the subject on here I have seen some template letters going around, but as long as you ask the right questions I don't see a need, but as I said previously find out how it was done, why and when first.0 -
I had my perfect history ruined by an trifling unfair default from a well known phone company (starts with a V and ends in misery) I did everything to try and get it removed even with patronizing help from their WRT (web relations team) - all to no avail I'm afraid all I could do in the end was put a Notice of Correction on my file which I don't think does much good anyway - you have my sympathies but the big boys don't seem to care much.0

I did manage to get a storecard default removed by being very nice but persistant for six months, it was not easy! I did a lot of research on the matter and in that time learnt that mobile phone companies do not need to issue default notices they can just slap one on your file without warning. My advice would be to get your sar from them and scrutinise for mistakes I found no mistakes but unlike you i am no expert and did not really know what i was looking for. In the end it could be described as a good will gesture.0
