Internal Job Application & Cover Letter

Does anyone have any hints, tips or just general advice on what to include in a covering letter for an internal application.
I've already been told that I will get an interview, but need to go through the process of submitting a cv and covering letter as well.
The role I am applying for is basically my own, but I've always tended to move companies and jobs rather than apply within before so I haven;t got a clue how in depth or formal I need to be.
Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Unless it is public sector i would suggest the covering letter and CV are far less important than actually engaging with the interviewer before the interview, and giving a credible interview. I would suggest a decision is probably already made.
That said it is important to be professional, to give an accurate an up to date CV reflecting what your responsibilities and achievements are in the current role. Also a brief and concise cover letter outlining that you wish to apply for the role, and why. Good luck0 -
why are you having to apply for your own job.0

So far i have had to do this 3 times, they call it reorganisation, it's not unusual.0 -
I'd approach it as if I were applying from outside. Assume that they know nothing about you beyond what's in the application. So do a covering letter like you'd do normally. Of course you can refer to the fact that you already enjoy working for the ABC company, but any information you want them to have should be in your CV and covering letter.
that covers you in case they shortlist 'properly', without regard to what they know about you already.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -

This is good advice. You're unlikely to lose out by making a 'proper' formal application (and it's also a chance to show off good stuff you've done that your employer may not know about). On the other hand, if you take the informal approach and they take a strict approach in shortlisting, you might end up suffering as a result.0
