No Work Uniform

Hi All

I heard through a friend that I could claim upto £600 per year as I don't have a specific work uniform and wear clothing that wouldn't be worn outside of work. I have to provide my own clothes and get no money or vouchers towards this from my employer.

Is this true?? if so how would i go about claiming this back I have searched the site and found info only if I have a company uniform that i have to wash myself etc.

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards
Al

    Your friend is talking rubbish.
    You cant claim anything.

If you wear a uniform or something with a company Logo on it, a small amount of tax can be claimed regarding the laundering/washing of it, and absolutely nowhere near £600.

I think its more like 20% tax on £60 or so ie £12 a year.

What job do you do and why cant your clothing be worn elsewhere.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

Visit the HMRC website for the full details.

You can claim tax relief if you have to wash/launder a work uniform. The amounts very depending on what you wear/what for. I receive one of the better rates which is about £180 a year tax relief as i have to wash all my uniform and my employers explicitly state that it cannot be worn outside of work.

If you have not claimed it for the past couple of years and you were entitled and can prove it then you can apply to claim it back. Several colleagues have done this recently.

search for HMRC EIM32712 which lists the different amounts for different industries.

I know PE teachers at my school are given staff PE uniform, and can claim the "laundry" tax relief. They can also claim relief on additional PE kit they purchase (I think the school only supplies a certain amount) because it's branded with the school logo and "Staff" and therefore wouldn;t be worn outside of work. I'd give the tax office a call.

If you have to provide small tools or buy specialist clothing for your work - like a uniform or protective clothing - you may be able to get tax relief for the cost of them.

It all depends what the clothing is.
