With the utmost respect to you, i would be engaging the services of an accountant, particularly in view of the questions that you have asked. It should not be expensive give the nature of the work that your OH( I know what this means but have never understood DH) does and could well save you money in the long run. This thread below is one example of what could happen with the unfortunate result that an accountant may charge more to right the wrongs:

In your case, I would be as worried that you may not claim every entitlement as I would in your OH paying too little tax.

what did he do before march 2012? he needs to declare all income between the 6th Apr 2011 - 5th April 2012. For instance if he was employed he needs to fill in an employment page for Apr-> date he left (The P45 figures of pay & tax), and then the Self Employment page for his CIS Turnover and deductions (tax) for 5th of March -> 5th of April.

You have until October to send this form in on paper so if you want to save money on an accountant I'd suggest signing up for a course run by HMRC's Business Support Team (FREE) on book-keeping or making an appointment at his local enquire centre for some free advice and help on completing the form.

    BST: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/bst/index.htm

Search here for your local Enquiry Centre: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/enq/

You will need to book an appointment to see an advisor in the Enquiry Centre. This can be done either by walking in to the office or by calling the 0845 3000 627 contact centre number. Personally, I'd walk in as it will take an age to get through on the helpline.

As for National Insurance, he should have been set up to pay Class 2 NI when he registered as newly self-employed. He should be getting a direct debit to pay it. If in doubt, he can give the NI guys a call on:

    0845 915 4655

    They are open 8:30-5pm mon-fri.
