hello

Just a bit of advice im looking for.

I got my P60 today for the last year and it says that my tax code was 647L. I thought the tax code changed in April last year to 747L.

If that is correct, should I contact the tax office to query this?

Thank you.

No - I would look at your last payslip first. It should be 747L ..... but I would take up any issues with your employer first. And only with HMRC if your employer has been operating the wrong code - as a refund should be due.

Yes, it was 747, did you have any perks from work, company car,
health insurance etc. that would bring your allowance down.

If you havent, then contact HMRC

    Thanks for relying.

I will check my payslip tomorrow, it's done online and I don't have my login details. I've checked with my work collegue and her tax code on her P60 also shows 647L, so maybe it wil be different on my payslip.

There are no benefits from work ie company car etc.

I just wondered if maybe I was paying the wrong tax because it says on the P60 "final tax code 647L", however if my colleagues is the same it will probably have been issued on the correct tax code and there was me thinking I might be getting a cheeky wee rebate lol.

If it's done online I would hope (although you wouldn't!) someone left the 647L hanging from last year's P60s? But wise to check your payslip as that should be the best indicator. If in doubt then throw your gross pay into here (select year 11/12) - let the allowance default to £7475 - and see if the tax matches your final payslip / P60?

Thanks for that link, I've input the details and it says my tax payable should be £445, but my P60 says that my tax deducted is £644.20?

I've checked an old wage slip from September and on that it says my tax code is 747L so I'm not sure what to go with.

I think I might contact HMRC tomorrow just to be on the safe side.

    Very odd as that - £200 - isn't a million miles away from the £1000 difference between £6475 and £7475 at 20%!

Your first port of call should be your payroll people. They have until 19th May to get last year's details to HMRC ...... who may be unable to help you at this point. But if it's proven your people have been operating incorrect codes for a lot of people .... perhaps best they resolve with HMRC how to handle it?

That is very weird. I would definitely chase that up. Is there any way you can stick your head in and speak to someone at your payroll department, ask them to explain the old code on the P60?

I would need to ask my boss to speak to them, I have no way of speaking to them myself as the payroll is done by my bosses accountants.
I don't know if he will actually contact them because my payslip says 747L but my P60 says 647L.

Well the tax on your P60 seems equivalent to the tax on a code of 647L. If that is a legitimate code for you, someone should be able to explain why. If nothing else, they need to explain why a payslip has one code and a P60 has another.

I'm sure it would be in their interests to start resolving this in a civilised manner with an informal chat.

But if the tax deducted says £6475 was used .... then something needs resolving.

It's not a useful link as it is primarily to do with underpayments .... but your employer should be contacting HMRC in the first instance if you draw a general (closed year) PAYE problem to their attention :
