Can I get lower than an A band?

Hi All
My first time here... cannot find the information I need, so am hoping that someone out there can help me.
We live in a caravan and pay A band council tax. Apparently this band is for properties up to £40,000. Well although we love our home, on a farm, which is rented, it seems unfair that we should have to fork out a value such as this... Is there any way I can get our council tax band changed? Any help would be appreciated... thanks.... Fweckles

Band A is the lowest band unless you get a Disabled Band Relief reduction.

I guess they estimate that even if your 'home' is worth less than £40000 you still use the facilities that other 'home' owners use, i.e. Emergency services, schools, libraries, rubbish collection, roads and everything else that your local council provides.....

I believe that the value of the caravan is immaterial as it is a 'chattel' (means something like movable possesion). The council tax is actually paid for the caravan pitch, boats are charged on their moorings. Both moorings and pitches are classed as the dwelling; boats and caravans are as you can see by this are treated a little differently from normal inn the world of council tax.

Your quite right, the Valuations Office will band the pitch/mooring intsead of the actual caravan or boat.

  • no you cant get lower than an A.

As far as the valuation office see's it, thats what you call your 'home' therefore its banded as an A. sounds harsh but thats what the government tells them to do :(

Alternative would be a revaluation based on individual house values rather than bands, ie going back to the old rates system.

Not sure any of the main parties is brave enough to suggest that and ensure the Daily Mail savaged them from now till doomsday.
