You know, it never occurred to me that people do this, but it all makes a lot of sense now... I must have grown up in a fair place! It all changed when I moved to a different city- finding something reduced was a rarity! I just never realised people spend hours hanging around waiting for the reductions to come out... Take solace in the fact you actually have a life!

Things like this bug me so much! When one person fills their trolley even though there is more than enough to sate the 15 people who can't get a look-in because this person is blocking the whole thing. Why do they think they deserve and need it more than anyone else? I'm like most people, I will take one or two reduced 'treats' but I'm fair about it too.

As for this dilemma - A lot of supermarkets have suggestion/comment boxes. See if the shop has one and put something in there.

Had it occurred to you that apart from being greedy, and penny pinching that some of these people have no work and nothing to do so they hang around to get a bargain.

Very sad ,you must be doing similar to have noticed it .

My gfs friend does this sort sort of thing, if something is on special offer she will clear the shelf even if its something she would never normally buy ,its greedy ,selfish and false economy .

Also very annoying if someone like me buys the product every week but can not because its on special and the shelf is now empty .

It is not a complaint as such, as the shop is doing nothing wrong, but you ought to tell them as people are effectively stealing from them - deliberately deciving them in order to get artificially lowered prices on what was perfectly good stock.

I am all for getting the best out of supermarkets, particularly as they are very controlling in an overpowering sellers' market, but this is dishonesty. The customers are coming in and hiding produce so that the shop cannot sell it at a proper price and then retrieving it in order to get it at a large discount.

These discounts should only apply when there is stock left over and if supplies run out (or even down to the dregs) then others will go without. As the eventual selling price is lower, revenues will be down and the shops will have to make the money elsewhere, ie. by increasing prices to our detriment.

As they cannot see the true stock levels, there is also a chance that they will order more in next time and so increase wastage in future.

I'd be quite interested to hear how they do it! No, I don't want to join in (!) but I have a vision of a pile of fruit and veg in a trolley with someone waiting for the lady with the reduction "gun" to come along. How does that work - whenever I see stuff reduced, it's in the reduction section, and it's already got a yellow sticker on it to say it's reduced. Do they put the stuff in the trolley at midday and then keep pushing the trolley around until the "witching" hour - and then waylay the "gun" lady and say - "I want these reduced - give us the stickers" ???
  • im slightly embarrased to say now thay i buy the "whoops" items, if they are not priced to my "liking" i would just walk away, i have heard of people asking for them to be reduced again but i would be so embarrased to do that, if i really need the item i will buy it at full price, im not gonna buy something just because its cheap. If there are bargains to be had while im in the supermarket ill have them but i wont wait around for them. If people are doing this personally i would leave them to it, they obviously have nothing better to do with their time. The supermarket will be fully aware of it so id just leave it to the managers to sort out.
  • Does the store puts new price labels on their produce ? If so, it is pointless for people to hoard stuff in their baskets prior to the price change and it then looks though it's every man for himself after the price change. Intimidating behaviour should never be tolerated in any situation, but that apart - life isn't fair, is it ?

Had a list of customers in my old store we weren't allowed to reduce for/banned as they had (after repeated warnings) been doing this, or seen un-rotating stock (moving today's date to the back) in the morning so it'd be there in the evening.

Other regular customers that would hover around while you're reducing. Pain in the !!!, I like space to do my job!

Definitely worth filling in a comments form (or whatever the equivalent is at the supermarket in question).
  • I wrote to Tescos about the same issue, and asked them to put a queuing system in place, limiting the amount of items that each customer could purchase, after I became disgusted at what I call the vultures/pack of wolves attitude.

There reply was "When items are reduced in store and placed in the reduced area, they are on a first come first served basis" and "regrettably, we are unable to change the process"

Unable to change, more like, can't be bothered!! Needless to say I am very disappointed that grabbers get everything whilst others get nothing!!!

Money Moral Dilemma: Time to tell on the veg hoarders?

Our local supermarket clears out fruit & veg for pennies right before closing time, and there's a bunch of regulars who come to get a good bargain at that time. Recently a few have been getting very aggressive, stockpiling things for hours ahead until the store assistant comes around, leaving little for anyone else. Should I complain to the manager or is all fair in the name of a bargain?
