Yes, that's my point, there's a way it can work, and a way it can't work. The reason the US works even though there are different economic conditions in the various states is because it's under one central government and variations of the regions are build in and taken account of.
The Euro-zone on the other hand is run by several governments all with their own electorate and internal interests. There is no degree of flexibility built in to the system.
In the US, most taxation is federal, and most of that comes from the richer states, but they don't get all airyated about it. Poorer states have failed to become "competitive" even after 200 years, but redistribution of federal revenue from rich states to poor states isn't described as bailouts."It will take, five, 10, 15 years to get back to where we need to be. But it's no longer the individual banks that are in the wrong, it's the banking industry as a whole." - Steven Cooper, head of personal and business banking at Barclays, talking to Martin Lewis0 -

Is it ?
Sales Tax is a State Tax.
State Income Taxes are deductable before Federal Income Tax is levied.
Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearm taxes are all state.
Property Tax is a state tax.
.......you can probably show that your assertion is correct, but I have my doubts.'In nature, there are neither rewards nor punishments - there are Consequences.'0 -
It also helps that pretty much all Americans speak English so moving for work is pretty simple.
Try getting a job as an office clerk in Sweden or Frankfurt if your office in Athens closes. You don't even use the same alphabet!
They seem to be able to cope ok with multiple languages in Switzerland, and Belgium, and Canada....0 -

maybe, but the fact is that most europeans are unable to speak the 27 different languages fluently and this does inhibit the free movement of people to comparable jobs0 -

Don't forget Wales

Great point.
Perhaps you could expand on how that applies to a single currency area particularly with respect to mobility of labour in your opinion.
My experience is that in Belgium and Switzerland you are expected to be a polyglot. Canada I don't know how it works.
Do you think for example that the continuation of Romansch as a national language of Switzerland has reduced Swiss competitiveness or helped relations with The Vatican as a kinda modern version of Latin?0 -
Wales isn't really divided into Welsh-speaking and English-speaking areas. What would be off-putting would be having to send your kids to a school where they don't speak a word of the language they'll be taught in. I think that's avoidable in most parts of Wales.Don't forget Wales

Sales tax is a state tax but generally only in single digits.
State income taxes are deductible but are scaled down depending on the level of income so don't always give a benefit on the Federal side.
Property tax is a "local" tax really (a bit like council tax but much higher).
Don't really know on the ATF ones.0 -

It is like that in North Wales, they only speak English (in the shops, pubs) when there are no English around
