Help! Locks have been changed.

I've just received a call from a close relative. They have returned home to find the door locks changed. They have been ignoring letters for about 5 to 6 months.
My question is, is it too late to recover from this? I've told them that I will pay the mortgage and as much of the outstanding/overdue amount. But once it has got to the locks being changed have they left it too long?
All advice greatly appreciated.

Appears that they may have been ignoring more than just letters.
