Taking out of date food from shop car park?

Earlier today my OH and I went to CO OP to pick up some fruit and whilst getting in the car we saw a clear bin bag left out with potatoes, leeks and peppers in which looked fine. After a little thinking we thought "why not? it is clearly rubbish" and we've brought it home with us. We have potato and leek soup cooking as I type.

Thing is, I know of 'freeganism' but I have never gone looking for food in bins etc, though with all that is wasted I don't have any problem with people doing that. But I am a bit of a goody two shoes, and have now connived myself that I could get in trouble for this :o ... even if it was just going to rot anyway.

Can anyone please put my mind at rest that I won't be arrested for taking some binned veggies?

If you took it and put it in your car just cross your fingers that you're not on CCTV. Just because it was left outside does not mean that the supermarket had relinquished ownership. No supermarket that I can think of would welcome the idea getting about that there's free food available for the taking. Which is why many contaminate it with bleach and whatnot before putting it out.

Morally - well done you! I hate to think of all the wasted food they can't give away.

Legally - it's a no no I'm afraid. Hey, there are worse laws to break and you won't go to jail for it. But expect this thread to be removed...

I don't blame you either for doing it, but is there a chance that it may have been put aside for a charity that feeds homeless people? I don't know if the co-op take part in a scheme like that. Hope you don't get in any bother for it. It would have to be a real jobsworth who would make an issue of it.
    Enjoy your soup!!!!

My late Ma -in-law before the war was so broke that she would trail around the markets when they were closing down on a Saturday afternoon looking for any 'dropped' veg of the stalls. She said it at least by going in her families stomachs rather than the bin it was going to good use.I think she was an amazing lady who at 28 was widowed with two very small toddlers to feed and she did what she had to to make sure they never went without.I applaude you resoursfulness, if it was going to be binned anyway what's the odds. I am as honest as the next person, but to me, to waste food is wicked, and it went to far better use than landfill so enjoy you soup, well done for spotting it
  • If they weren't covered in bleach, I think we can safely assume that somebody in the store specifically put them out for others to take.

    Don't lose sleep over it.

I got a whole trolley of food, household products and suchlike from a supermarket once - I found an abandoned trolley with it in, called the store and they said it was obviously a push out theft, the thieves would have taken meat, alcohol and electricals, and as they would only be forced to destroy it all if it were returned, I may as well keep what I want.

Some staff still think for themselves, you see.

The girl that got done was a middleaged woman who broke into the store's bin area by scaling a high wall, armed with bags and two friends and removed huge quantities of unsafe meat products following a fridge breakdown.

    It's not quite the same.

22 is middle aged! I'm going to die soon!
