Probably very naive of me to ask, but.. where does health come in to it?

Hi there,
I've had a real rough ride with money since I turned 18. I had severe mental health problems up until 2010, and so took it upon myself to wade through the mountains of debt I had run up, most of which I can't even remember. I've FINALLY just finished paying it off :j with my benefits; I am on incapacity and DLA, for severe diabetes complications. My question is this... I've just received an invoice for £401 that I owe to Three for mobile broadband, however I took the contract out just before my eyesight rapidly began to deteriorate and during the year in which my eyesight was down to 10% and I very nearly went blind, subsequently had a heap of ops (luckily am now okay) obviously the last thing on my mind was this sodding contract!
So what I'm wanting to know is, am I being very naive for wondering if I explain the circumstances they may reduce some of the debt? £287 as a termination fee, ridiculous, and I'm just wanting to know as I could not terminate the contract properly at the time might they give me a bit of leeway?
Thanks guys!

I think the best they will do is allow you to pay it at a reasonable rate -10 a month or something0
