Help with my debt problem - Not sure what to do.

Ok, a little bit strange i think but here goes.
When i was a student I wracked up some debt. Bank overdrafts, credit cards etc.
I then lost my part time job and could not afford to pay. I did the silly thing of burying my head in the sand.
This is where it gets a little tricky. Some letters still go to my parents (did not live there at the time, they must have found their address) saying they are attempting to find if i live there. I have moved house, technically, 3 times since i got the debts (5 times since i lived with parents)
I have not heard myself from some of them for ages. I mean like about 5 years, maybe even upto 8 years for some.
I have had problems sleeping for years because of this, but dont know what to do. As much as i tell myself it doesnt bother me, it does, really does. I dont want to chase them up incase they have been written off and they reactiviate them, and i'm scared of using a credit check site incase the debtors get my details from them (if thats possible).
My wife and i are looking to get a loan or re-mortgage (she owns the house) to get an extension built to house the growing family. With this i now cant get my debts out of my head.
Can i check my credit rating (to apply for mortgage etc)? I only earn just enough to get by on and worry what will happen if i have loads to pay back. I could afford to pay back some debts or a mortgage, but not both together.
Where do i go from here? Help.

All defaults will drop off your credit file after 6 years. If you perform a standard credit check on yourself, it might alert your creditors, but if it is more than 6 years since you spoke to them, you are under no obligation to settle with them. Just politely point this out in a 'statute barred' letter (you'll find them floating around if you do a search) and that's it. However, your creditors might have successfully registered a CCJ against you which means that it *might* cause you some problems when you try to get more credit.Debt Free! Long road, but we did it

How do i find out if they have put a CCJ against me?
I did get a letter several years ago threatening one, but never recieved anything else and thats when i still lived in the house that they had as my mailing address.0 -
Can bmw one recommend the best was of checking my status please?
And what is the likely hood of it alerting my creditors?0 -
I'm afraid I cannot help but I'm sure others can. However, have you thought about going to CAB to discuss the issues. they may be able to give you more solid advice? x0
