Jersey potatoes - a waste of money?

There once was a time when Jersey Royal potatoes could tempt money from the tightest purse. They had a buttery, earthy flavour that nothing else could match.
But where has that magical taste gone? Over the years, the flavour seems to have vanished and this year I have had even Egyptian and Israeli new potatoes that have tasted not the same - but just as good.
What a shame. A once unique taste of spring/early summer - a luxury that now seems to be a waste of money.

I agree, they were always much anticipated in our house but unfortunately they just don't seem to have the same taste - I'm sure they used to be more 'bean' shaped too.0 -
I agree. I bought some last week in Asda (only because they were reduced in price) and they were tasteless. Certainly wouldn't waste my money on them again!0

Anyone find the same with chantenay carrots??
I find them pretty tasteless now and back to "ordinary" carrots.

Well, according to the application made under the EU Protected Food Names Scheme back in 2003 (?) "Seaweed is extensively used as a fertiliser, this enhances the flavour of the potatoes", but according to BBC Jersey in 2010 it "isn't used on a wide scale anymore".0 -
Another vote for Cheshire potatoes
I have had some pretty tasteless Jersey Royals this past couple of years

I find them quite tsty if steamed but I'm just as happy with bog standard!dorsetlady wrote: »I agree. I bought some last week in Asda (only because they were reduced in price) and they were tasteless. Certainly wouldn't waste my money on them again!
Same here (only mine were reduced in Sainsburys). I wouldn't call them tasteless but certainly no different from ordinary new pots we had the week before.
I'll give a vote for Gower potatoes on Swansea market but they probably taste the same now too!0 -
I don't think |I've ever had Cheshire or Israeli potatoes but will look out for them. Had some Majorcan ones last week & they were nice.0

Perhaps it's because they're pre-cleaned nowadays; when I was a girl, it always seemed to be my job to scrape the new pots - nobody left the skins on back then. It was a real pain in the neck. But perhaps whatever they're cleaned in now takes some of the flavour out at the same time.0
