Cheap eggs - Keep some chickens!

This is my first post on here, so firstly, hello
I've decided to get some chickens in a couple of months, when I have saved up for a eglu. I have one remaining question though..
I've started growing various salads etc in the garden, and wish to protect these. The best bet seems to be a chicken-wire fence, but how high would this have to be to stop the birds gettign at my greens?
On a related note, I was concerned about bird-flu and any potential cullings, so had a dig around and asked the eglu people. Seems there is nothign to worry about at the moment, but the following links are quite useful.

Hens don`t need a fancy or expensive house. They are lovely pets and you get fond of them very quickly. In the papers today avian flu may be in the orkneys. If it comes here then no neighbour will want hens next door. Only get them if you have an indoor facility **just in case**0

Not sure on the viability of Chickens.Anything you were to save on eggs will be lost buying rat bait. Most people overlook opportunity as it comes dressed in overalls, and looks like hard work.0
