    Hi Tomsmum
I am already standing in the corner shaking my head! I had a letter saying that bank acc details were wrong, so they couldnt pay mine by BACS.
I think they made the mistake with a sort code. This was 2 weeks ago and I have written back reiterating the correct details
I was paid 37p interest, which was more than wiped out after a 10 min phone call and being kept on hold.

    Nigem

If you need to ring them again, look on Saynoto0870, I believe there is an 0161 number, if you can ring this when you are in a free call time on your phone package. Prefix your dialling by 141 so they dont know where you are calling from (its for overseas taxpayers really) I always do this and it doest cost me a penny to ring because HMRC are open till at least 8pm
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

We who have submitted an R27 are not the only people to complain about the lack of joined up government:

    http://www.taxationweb.co.uk/tax-articles/general/hmrc-launch-special-bereavement-services.html

Someone phone this number and access "the bereavement advisor" & report back?

The bereavement helpline is accessed via the general taxes number 0845 300 0627 (the Textphone number for those with impaired speech or hearing is 0845 302 1408). Callers will be able to select option buttons to speak to a bereavement tax adviser from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Mondays to Fridays, and from 8a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays.

I wonder, if this had been in place when I stepped onto the roundabout, whether my experience would have been better? It will be interesting to see if things go more smoothly for bereaved people now, just a bit too late for me as my latest letter is the only one with this new number on.

I did ring this number last week and once they eventually decided they were able to take my call there was an option for "if you are ringing about someone who has died" or similar words, and I think it was lumped in with something else, not sure now. However, once I got through to a real person I told him I was enquiring about repayment of tax of my late husband, after giving his NI number, date of birth and a few other security questions about him then the conversation went quite smoothly although it did highlight they had ignored my wishes regarding repayment should be made to my bank and there was not a satisfactory answer as to why when I pointed out that they'd had my bank details three times going back as far as January.

So maybe someone new coming in will find things not so much of a shambles. One can hope!

Todays post brought another letter telling me that the money would shortly be in my account! I wait with baited breath.

It also brought, in the same envelope, an R27 for another person, different name and address.

It makes me wonder about their systems, data protection and gives me no confidence in HMRC to get things right.

Oh well, back to the corner, :wall::wall:

Well, I'm pleased (and surprised) to say that my payable order arrived through the post on Wednesday so maybe you wont have to wait much longer Nigem.

I still don't know why my request for payment to my bank account was ignored, other than the pathetic excuse that someone didn't put the information on the computer, and like you say Nigem it doesn't give one confidence in HMRC getting anything right.

I'm very pleased to say that was the last thing outstanding regarding my late husband's financial affairs, apart from I am paying the DWP back in instalments for their overpayment of DLA after they were told he was in hospital and wouldn't be coming home. I can now file everything away.

Heaven help anyone who has complicated matters to deal with, mine was very straightforward as a lot of things had been sorted prior to his passing but it's amazing how HMRC managed to turn it into the most frustrating experience, and even now there's still a little niggle about whether they actually got it right in the end considering the left hand doesn't seem to know what the right hand is doing there.

It might not be as straightforward as it seems, but I wouldn't ask you to post details here. It might be a HMRC mistake, but not necessarily - depending on who you bank with.

HMRC do not issue R27 repayments to banks electronically - but they will normally send your payable order directly to your bank if asked. Unfortunately it is up to the bank whether they accept it. A few banks do not have the processes or facilities in place to deal with such payments and will not accept them. Not saying yours is one of those, but it is possible.

Anyway, glad to hear everything has now been sorted for you.

It wasn't an R27 repayment though. I returned the R27 and asked to do a self assessment instead and they sent me the SA100 form.

I filled in what was necessary on the R27 when requesting SA, including the section which asked for bank details if a repayment was to be made. On the SA100 form I again filled in the section for bank details. The bank details were then also given in a letter when I wrote asking them where my repayment was almost 6 weeks after they wrote telling me it was being made. When I phoned I asked the chap why the repayment wasn't being made to the bank as requested, his reply was that "the information hasn't been transferred to the computer" so I can only assume that this is inefficiency within HMRC rather than the bank not dealing with this sort of payment.

HMRC have always been happy to accept payment of our taxes through this bank after self assessment and sending out the bill. But of course, they always seem much more [STRIKE]efficient[/STRIKE] speedy in collecting taxes than repaying them ;).

So it was my bank that entered the meaningless numbers next to the tax refund that I was not expecting and could not recognise?!!!!!

Ah read the instructions and remember HMRC is forcing your banker to double check the information:

If the B]paper[/B payable order is to go to your bank or building society, or that of your nominee, fill in boxes 42 to 44:

[viz:] Branch Sort Code/account number/name of account holder(s)

So it is not just HMRC that cannot get the staff these days !

Ah sorry, I missed your earlier post about the SA100. SA payments should go
through ok by BACS - it does sound like something went wrong at HMRC's end. Did you get a SA302 Tax Calculation or P800 when they first told you about the repayment?
