Hi guys, my hoover packed up the other day JUST as we finally started to get somewhere on saving for a summer break!
Anyway, such is life, I need to dip in to the savings and buy a new one so my question is; any recommendations for a decent upright vacuum cleaner? Ideally I'd like to pay no more than £50, the lower the better as it's coming out of the holiday fund!
Thank you for your reply in advance!

I always like to buy a decent brand when possible. Looking at the Comet website, the cheapest preferred brand I see is:
PANASONIC MC-UG302 £79.99
Also available at Kitchen Science website for £61.49.
Over budget, but I think it's worth paying for quality in the long term.
Does anyone know what VAX is like as a brand, as they have some in your budget.
I have a Miele vacuum cleaner. It's good, but over your budget.
Bosch also a quality brand, but over your budget:
Bosch BSGL3126GB Pro Energy Cylinder Vacuum Cleaner
£98.96 at John Lewis
Remember to check for replacement hoover bag availability!!

What I'm saying too is spend a bit more to get a reliable, well built vacuum cleaner. Long term, this will be the cheaper option. If you think how much you're going to use it, spending the extra can be justified.

We bought our last 2 hoovers for less than £50 each and each of them only lasted for less than 2 years. So about 3 months ago when we needed another hoover I did some research and bought one of these that with the offer is only just over your budget:

Registering it on-line extended the warranty to 3 years. So far so good it's a bit heavier than the previous ones but it seems to be much more robust and the filters are easy to clean.
Ok why is a mere male posting about hoovers? Well I took early retirement last year (my wife retires this September) so I could have a year playing with car, going away golfing, etc. In reality I've now somehow become responsible for all the shopping, washing (Not ironing), dusting and hoovering so I've learnt a bit about these things!0 -
I bought a reconditioned Dyson from a specialist trader at a car boot sale about three years ago for £30 complete with a six month warranty - its still going strong today and is in daily use following the trail of Labrador hair around the house!0

I would look into what Darren says. I have had many different types over the years but Dyson topped them all. Even the older ones. Try Ebay and see what you find with traders or even do a local search.
I have a Dyson ball (no idea which model) and it is amazing. We bought a wreck of a house and have had loads of building work and it has coped just fine. OH broke the hose on it...... rather than buy a new one as we still have lots of work to do here my mum gave me her old vax hoover which she has just replaced with a Dyson.
It is very good for the price it was. does a great job..I just find a Dyson better. the ball ones are much easier to push around0 -
Thanks for the reply guys!
Darren, did you mean something like this? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Dyson-DC07-ORIGIN-IN-YELLOW-AND-SILVER-6-MONTH-WARRANTY-/180878054683?pt=UK_Vacuum_Cleaners&hash=item2a1d2c151b#ht_500wt_1287
Nearly Old: I'm actually not too upset about my hoover packing in, as I bought it for £3 at a car boot when I got my first flat! It lasted me a long time, was super light and had great suction, it was an electrolux. I'm just upset it had to die on me! Now I live with my partner and he works full time and me part time, so I too am the 'home maker!' What a lovely hubby you are, if ever I am at work more than my partner I shall certainly be reminding him of all my housewife like duties!0
