Do the French run a trade surplus? Otherwise not being able to pay for imports like food and oil could be an economic challenge under the OPs scenario...

The French have plenty of cheese, wine, lots of bread, and acres of fat cows.

They have millions of hours of film and tv to watch that no one else in the world wants to see, oddly shaped unreliable cars to drive around in, yoghurt factories where the bosses are afraid of being held hostage by the workers if they abuse their powers, and a legion of indefatigable lorry drivers ready to completely seal France's borders from any exports at a moments notice.

    They will be fine.

Is that why Hollywood have been plagiarising French films for decades ;)

Hollande and his party are very much pro-EU: They will certainly not leave the euro, and they will certainly not renege on any debt.

65% of France's trade is within the Eurozone so not wise to upset their neighbours either.

Would be interesting to see what would happen to french farming without the CAP to support it.

Meanwhile, for a more grown-up analysis, the following makes interesting (if a bit dense) reading http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/comment/ambroseevans_pritchard/9249598/Francois-Hollande-has-ten-weeks-to-avert-a-French-bond-crisis.html

The French may well cobble something together with their pals, the Germans. But if they do it is likely not to be in the interests of anyone else.

Still, as they would say, plus ca change....

Step 1. Abandon the euro completely and default on all French debts issued in euros. Any French citizen holding a euro denominated debt created under the fractional reserve system is forgiven.
Forget the rest. Once a sovereign state pulls a stunt like that, no one will trust it. So the rest of the plan is to force citizens to register all Monopoly sets in the country and use the money in them to underwrite a new currency.
