AGHHH - forgotten annual paypal subscription :-(

I'm so annoyed with myself
I had an email the other day saying Paypal couldn't collect an annual payment subscription as the card was expired. Good, I thought, I no longer need the subscription (it was annual membership to a travel club I don't use).
Yesterday I had lots of things sell on eBay, totaling about £90 including postage in my Paypal account. I spent £20 on something I needed on eBay, went to withdraw the remaining £70 into my bank account today, and found the subscription has been taken from my Paypal balance.
My fault for not cancelling the subscription, I know, but can I reverse the payment somehow? Or is the money gone? "Only" £32 but a hard earned £32 from eBay sales and money I really needed :-(
I had assumed that, as they had tried once and failed, they wouldn't try again for the money.
