The stuff the supermarkets sell in packets may be like that, but if you get the proper stuff from a butchers then the experience is soooo much better!
I live on the south coast and found a gem of a shop on the way to a wedding in the New Forest. Passed a parade of shops and they had an advertisement board on the side of the road for biltong. We had to turn around and go back and I run quickly into the shop in my suit to get a bag! (we werent late for the weddding)
You can get biltong in different textures and fatty levels. This shop sells the meat dry, medium or wet. They can also be lean, medium or fatty. Fat and wet (ooo-err!!!!) was beautiful - and not like the dried up bootlaces at all!!!0 -
I think you have to be born south of the Equator to really appreciate it:DI was off to conquer the world but I got distracted by something sparkly

What about cous cous...and peanut soup!?
I wonder how big the cous cous pack is...Mr A has 1kg for around 1.30 and Ocado for 1.19. If it is a 1kg pack it's a fairly good deal.0 -
The problem is we can easily get most of this stuff and we no longer think of it as African. However, most of it is better in Africa - take mango juice, that is heaven over there, the packaged stuff is no good compared to fresh. I had fresh mango juice in Egypt and it was WONDERFUL, problem was you nearly needed a spoon to consume it, it was almost a meal on it's own. Funny thing is I have been to Africa on many occasions and not yet tried biltong, so I shall be trying that this time. Wish me luck ...............What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0

It was in South Africa I tasted it. I liked the dried "vors" (boerewors) but thought the biltong was awful.miketaff1408 wrote: »The stuff the supermarkets sell in packets may be like that, but if you get the proper stuff from a butchers then the experience is soooo much better!
