    I've seen weevils in supermarket (Tesco or Asda, can't remember which) strong white flour that was just before the best before date.

    I was a wuss and ended up binning the flour.
    Hoping this year is better than the last. :)

    And I've had weevils in in-date supermarket flour whilst living in Harrow, but none since moving to semi-rural Dorset & buying a fair proportion of it from a local mill! Just goes to show, you never can tell... ;-)
    I threw that flour away too, but now I'd just chuck it in the freezer for a day or two then use it up fast.

    Not sure about the flour but I have used dried fast action yeast (the kind in the sachets) nearly 3 years past it's date and it worked perfectly.
    Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

    The only time I've seen weevils was a major brand flour, fairly fresh as the pallet had just been delivered to the supermarket (I used to work for them).The whole flour delivery was collected within hours and incinerated, It was put down to just "one of those things that happen sometimes."
    Incidentally freezing flour for four days will kill any weevils that are present, including the eggs.

    Late to the party, but thought you should know that the oldest yeast I've used was at least 5 years beyond its use-by date. It was the fast acting dried yeast in sachets.

    Actually, thinking about it, the yeast I'm currently using is probably almost as old. I know exactly when bought it in June 2008, when I visited an American friend at the airbase where she lived. (She moved Stateside later that year.) We drove down to RAF Lakenheath and went shopping in the commisary. It's a jar of Fleischmann's fast acting dried yeast, which I finally opened earlier this year when we christened the breadmaker. Stored it in the fridge all that time.

  • When did you last check your flour/baking products stash????

    I haven't made much in the way of homemade bread for a few months. Had a notion to do so this morning. What a bad move:(

    First bag of flour our - moving with weevils, 2nd, 3rd, 4th:eek:. Moved on to bread mixes - 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th :eek::eek::eek:

    Ended up throwing out about 10-12kgs of flour/bread mixes. Got windy about my dried yeast and then my baking powder sachets. What started as a 3 shelf full cupboard is now 1/4 full. However, my wheelie bin is almost full. What an absolute waste, but I couldn't bring myself to use any of it, despite reading back of this thread.

    I cannot remember ever having weevils before, have always bought cheaper near to sell by date flours and bread mixes. Why now and why me!!!!!

    Last safe bread mix proving now, so fingers crossed for a tasty loaf.
