Hi all,
Not sure if this is the correct board or not (sorry).
Basically I am after a new vacuum cleaner that has good suction and am after advice on the best of whats currently available and at a money saving price if possible!
I have tried looking online but am just getting confused by all the numbers..... is it the watts that dictate suction?
Hope you can help

Q1 - What's your budget ?
Q2 - Do you want a cylinder or upright ? Compact ?
Q3 - Do you have pets ?
Q4 - Do you have allergies ?
Q5 - Do you want bagless or bagged ?
I bought a bagless vax compact on special offer and it does the job. (it does fill up quickly though!!) Love the flex rewind function and huge savings on not buying bags!!!
I could have bought a Dyson but thought too posh for me n cat! (well cat hates the vac!)0 -
Thinking of a cylinder as its what i have always had, got a VAX at the moment and not been that impressed by it, have to crawl around on the floor using just the nozzle to get it to suck up all the dust/hair (and being 6 months pregnant it is taking its toll!!)
Not got pets but do leave a trail of my own hair!!
Don't have any allergies
I would like to try an avoid Dysons if i can (friends and family have had differing experiences either very good or nothing but trouble with more of the latter!)
Not fussed by bagged or bagless - current is bagless but had bagged in the pastMarried my wonderful husband 29th May 20110 -
I think you will struggle to beat a Henry.

All builders have them as do 99% of professional cleaning companies.
They are increibly strong, the motor lasts for ever and the parts don't break. I regularly drop mine, kick it down the stairs etc and it still carries on working.
I don't even use bags with mine as they aren't necessary.
They are very simple and use basic technology so there is very little to go wrong with them. They don't even have an auto rewind on the bcable so there is even less to go wrong, just a basic hand rewind.
I've had mine over 17 years and nothing has ever failed. It regularly gets taken onto building sites and handles alot of mess.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0 -
Miele cylinder:) I've just given my 18 year old one to my DD as I bought a lighter weight one. Never had to do anything to it apart from change the bags. The old one still sucks like new:)0

Best one I had was a Bagged cylinder Phillips Oslo, powerful 1000w (£90 1989 to 2010) but got sick of finding and buying bags.
Bad experience with Electrolux as kept sparking, even though I put new carbon motor bushes, it would only work upside down!!!
(friend has bought the budget ones and they fail barely out of warranty)
My Vax doesn't have to suction of the Phillips but for the price, the Vax does the job.0 -
if you buy a dyson i would buy the very basic one, we have had 3 so far, the old one lasted 10 years and we only needed a replacement hose, the last year was used for doing up a house so very pleased, the second one is now up in the roof but it was very good, currently using a compact dyson but it feels very flimsy and not sure it will last beyond the 5 year warranty but it suits the limited storage space we now have. Next time it will be a meile / numatic.0

I bought the lightweight S2. It's 1600 watt suction and sucks up the kitchen lino where it's not stuck down in the middle-lol
My old one had a telescopic hose and the tools were stored inside which I do miss as it made storage a bit easier for me.
New one was bought for under £100 though:)
You can compare Miele models here http://www.miele.co.uk/vacuum-cleaners/cylinder-cleaners/compare/
If you fancy one check Very, Comet, Currys and Miele themselves as the prices do seem to jump up and down.
Regarding a Henry. We have one at work and on the odd occassion I've had to use it I've found it difficult to push over the carpets and it had carp suction.0
